Whitethorn Valley Farm

Galen and Ruby, Owner/Operator

A family-operated farm that uses regenerative, closed loop practices to produce top-shelf, sun grown flower.

Sun + Earth Certified

How did you get started in cannabis?

Galen got an early start in cannabis; growing at the age of 13, hiding in the bushes, growing seeds snagged from his parents. It was the end of the CAMP era. It wasn’t for 15 more years, when the opportunity to buy back part of the family homestead arose, that he and his then fiance, Ruby took a leap of faith and acquired the property and launched Whitethorn Valley Farm.

What are the most rewarding aspects of your work?

Getting to watch the land heal and improve in response to our stewardship; these subtle changes play out in our cannabis plants with improved disease resistance, exhilarating terpene profiles, and “knock-your-socks-off” effects.

And the most challenging?

Navigating the hurdles of being compliant with every agency to the point that we spend more time figuring out how to check the boxes then growing the herb.

What are you doing with your operation to help preserve and enhance Humboldt’s cannabis industry for the future?

We are committed to the improvement of the Humboldt County Cannabis Community via cultivation practices through adoption of regenerative farming practices, fair and respectful treatment of workers, and the never-ending slog to carve out a niche for appellation designated, small, sungrown, craft family farms that made this place what it is today.

How does your farm help tell the story of cannabis in Humboldt?

Each of us has a platform from which to share our stories and to demonstrate our community values, environmental stewardship, and commitment to Humboldt Cannabis. We strive to be models for our fellow farmers and educate consumers whenever possible. Humboldt County has an incredible diversity of microclimates and immense cultivation know-how. We are also an incredibly stubborn, talented, and crazy bunch of folks that live here for a reason, and aren’t going anywhere.

If you weren't a cannabis operator, what would you be doing?

Environmental conservation and restoration work is a core part of our identity and will continue to be one of our top priorities.

What do you have in your stash?

The Fool ; ) an amazingly gassy kush that can trace its lineage back to the Hindu Kush Mts. A couple tokes of this will leave you wondering why you ever got into this whole thing in the first place.

What's one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

We did all of our permitting ourselves.

What advice would you give someone trying to get into the cannabis industry?

Stay true to your roots. And have persistence.
